If you are not familiar with the 10th Step of Alcoholics Anonymous, it teaches us to continue to take personal inventory and when we are wrong to promptly admit it.
I do this every night before I go to sleep. I review my day and make sure that I have not said or done something that has caused harm to another human being.
Why do we do this? Simply because carrying around guilt or shame is incredibly unhealthy. It is so much easier to handle this daily and clean the slate, so that guilt is not our constant companion.
Alcoholics carry a lot of guilt around with them. We get rid of that guilt when we do the 4th and 5th Steps, but then it is necessary to do a daily house cleaning of sorts so that we can face each new day with a light heart.
Come to think of it, the 10th Step is good idea for anyone, alcoholic or not! 🙂
I didn’t follow the steps, I turned to my now Pastor, as I was convinced I needed alcohol to sleep and avoid the bad dreams about the hole I was in, he suggested writing everything down before going to sleep, to empty the mind. I started doing that a few days before I stopped drinking, I note things I’ve said or done I’m not happy with and try to work on that over time. It Works.
Great Post, Thank you.
